An open work permit lets you work for almost any Canadian employer. It is not a default — it is granted to specific categories. Most applicants qualify through PGWP, BOWP, spousal sponsorship or one of the public-policy streams.

- An OWP application from inside Canada requires existing status — applying without it can trigger refusal.
- Spousal OWP eligibility for spouses of foreign workers/students is restricted to skilled occupations; rules have tightened since 2024.
- PGWP eligibility is one-time and depends on the institution and program — workarounds (taking a second short program) often fail.
- An OWP holder is not a PR — switching jobs is allowed, but PR pathways still require their own evidence.

Can my spouse work in Canada if I'm a worker?+
Only in defined cases. As of 2024, the spouse of a foreign worker generally needs the principal worker to hold a permit in a NOC TEER 0-3 occupation for the spouse to qualify for an open work permit.
Is the PGWP an open work permit?+
Yes. The PGWP is an open work permit issued once after completing an eligible Canadian post-secondary program.
Can I switch jobs on an open work permit?+
Yes. An open work permit does not name an employer — you can work for almost any Canadian employer, except those listed as ineligible.
What is a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)?+
A BOWP lets you continue working while your PR application is being processed. You must have a complete PR application in queue under an eligible program and apply before your current work permit expires.
Can I get an open work permit through marriage?+
Yes — if you are being sponsored inland by a Canadian citizen or PR spouse/partner, you typically qualify for a spousal open work permit during processing.
