An undersea cabling project is underway to provide fibre internet access to Big Tancook Island and Little Tancook Island. This initiative was announced by the Province of Nova Scotia through the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, as reported on August 6, 2026.
The project aims to connect approximately 200 homes and businesses on the islands to high-speed internet. This development is part of a broader provincial effort to expand internet access to underserved areas.
Funding for the project is a joint effort between the provincial and federal governments. The Government of Canada is contributing over $1.7 million through the Connect to Innovate program, while the Province of Nova Scotia is investing $1.2 million through its Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative.
Installation of the undersea fibre optic cable is anticipated to begin in the coming months, with completion projected within the next year. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to enhance connectivity for residents and support economic activities on the islands.
The project is being managed by the Nova Scotia Internet Trust, in collaboration with government partners. This initiative aligns with the province's goal of ensuring that all Nova Scotians have access to reliable internet services.
