The Government of Saskatchewan has launched its annual hay salvage and ditch mowing program, aimed at supporting farmers and improving highway safety across the province.
According to the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program, landowners adjacent to highway ditches are permitted to harvest free hay until July 8. After this date, any individual may mow provided it does not interfere with ongoing Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways operations.
This program serves multiple functions, including enhancing visibility at intersections, providing feed for livestock, controlling brush and weeds, and improving snow storage in ditches. Over 45,300 hectares of ditches are designated for management under this initiative.
In 2023, approximately 1,600 permits were issued by the Ministry of Highways, facilitating the harvest of ditch hay. Individuals interested in participating are required to obtain a permit, which is available free of charge from the nearest Ministry of Highways office. This ensures appropriate authorization and coordination with provincial highway maintenance activities.
