Express Entry is Canada's flagship federal economic immigration system, managing CEC, FSW, FST and most PNPs. In 2023 IRCC added category-based selection draws — a major change that has reshaped who gets invited.

How it works

  1. Submit an Express Entry profile after confirming eligibility for CEC, FSW or FST.
  2. The system scores your profile using CRS (out of 1,200).
  3. IRCC holds draws roughly every two weeks — general, program-specific, or category-based.
  4. If your CRS meets the cut-off, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  5. 60 days to submit a complete PR application.

CRS calculation

  • Core human capital (up to 500/460): age, education, language, Canadian work experience
  • Spouse factors (up to 40): education, language, Canadian work experience
  • Skill transferability (up to 100): education + language + experience combos
  • Additional points (up to 600): provincial nomination, French language, sibling in Canada, Canadian study credential

Provincial nomination is the single biggest CRS lever — 600 points effectively guarantees an ITA.

Recent CRS cut-offs

  • General draws: high 480s – mid 540s
  • CEC-specific: similar
  • PNP-only: 700+ (dominated by the 600 bonus)
  • French-language category: often 380–470
  • Healthcare/STEM/Trades: typically 430–510

Strategy 1: Improve your CRS

  • Language: CLB 7 → CLB 9 = 50–100 points
  • French: bilingual bonus opens category-based draws
  • More Canadian work experience
  • Additional education credentials (ECA)
  • Spouse: improve their English/French

Strategy 2: Get a provincial nomination

600 CRS — decisive. Most provinces run Express Entry-aligned streams. Lists change frequently.

Strategy 3: Target a category

Document your NOC hours carefully. Reference letters must mirror NOC duties.

Strategy 4: FSW from outside Canada

Category-based draws now reach offshore profiles. Maximize language and education.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong NOC TEER (TEER 4/5 are not eligible for CEC/FSW)
  • Letting language scores expire (2 years)
  • Ignoring spousal factors (20–40 points)
  • Mistiming profile vs LMIA/PNP/language test
