Nova Scotia has announced a new approach to delivering employment supports for individuals receiving Income Assistance, transitioning services from community-based organizations to direct government oversight.
According to an August 11, 2026, announcement from Nova Scotia News, this change aims to provide consistent service delivery across the province. The Department of Community Services will assume responsibility for these employment supports, which include assessments, service planning, and connections to employment and training opportunities. Approximately 1,300 individuals receiving Income Assistance currently access these employment services.
The transition will involve current staff from the 21 community organizations delivering these services being offered positions within the Department of Community Services. This integration is intended to ensure continuity of service for clients and leverage the experience of existing personnel.
This new model follows recommendations from the independent Poverty Reduction Strategy Advisory Committee and consultations with various stakeholders, including people with lived experience, community organizations, and department staff. The provincial government states that the goal is to enhance program effectiveness and achieve better employment outcomes for Income Assistance recipients.
Further details regarding the implementation timeline and specific operational changes are expected to be communicated by the Department of Community Services as the transition progresses.
