Canadian citizenship confers the right to a Canadian passport, the right to vote, full mobility rights, and security against removal.

Who can apply

Adult applicants must:

  1. Be a Canadian PR with valid status
  2. Be physically present in Canada at least 1,095 days (3 years) out of the last 5
  3. Be tax-compliant for at least 3 of the 5 years
  4. Demonstrate adequate English or French (ages 18–54)
  5. Pass the citizenship test (ages 18–54)
  6. Not be under a prohibition

  • Days as temporary resident BEFORE PR (within the 5-year window): half a day (max 365 = 1 year)
  • Days outside Canada: do not count

Language

CLB 4+ in English or French. Acceptable evidence: government-recognized language test, secondary/post-secondary education in English/French, government-funded LINC/CLIC certificates.

The oath

Virtual or in-person ceremony. You become a citizen the moment you take the oath.

Timeline

8–18 months from complete application to oath.

Fees

Adult: CAD 630 total (CAD 530 processing + CAD 100 Right of Citizenship). Minors: CAD 100.

Dual citizenship

Canada allows it. Your country of origin may not — check with their consulate.

Citizenship by descent

Generally limited to the first generation born abroad. The first-generation limit has been subject to legal challenge — verify the current state of the law.
